The Granny Square Blanket

Ahhh finally! Finally I can share that I have finished the Grany Square Blanket that I have been working on for so long, so thank you for sticking with me while I have been slowly progressing. If you are interested please go check out my Instagram and you can see all the pictures and videos involved for the blanket.

This has definitely been a slow burn project that has ramped up this year. I think I actually started this project about this time last year. I saw a beautiful creation by Nautikrall on instagram and I was inspired to do something similar. Back then I didn’t really know a lot about crocheting or about yarn weightings, so I decided to get myself a whole bunch of different blue yarns and a grey all in fingering weight from Birdstreet Yarn. I also needed to then find a background colour as well and that’s when I stumbled across Beehive Yarns and I decided on a black for the background and a sparkly black. I also then used Zakami Yarns to stitch all the squares together. I have linked Birdstreet Yarn, Beehive Yarns and Zakami Yarns, so click on their names and you’ll be taken to their websites!

I will be honest and say that one of the hardest parts of this blanket for me was stitching it together and the motivation to keep going.
The black squares were quite hard to stay motivated on because I had to make 117 of them. But I managed it in batches of ten and then would tally the ten up and take a break for a bit. But then came the stitching. The elation of finishing off all the squares was slightly squashed because I had to decide where I wanted all the squares and then the stitching them all together.
Here’s where I made a mistake, I should have watched and done the Join As You Go technique, but I completely forgot about it until I was a few rows deep and by then it was too late and I sure as hell wasn’t undoing what I had already done!

It’s gorgeous!! I’ve wanted to try granny squares too and the stitching tgt is also daunting. I shall do the join as you go technique too, when I get there!

I love the blanket. Yes, the stitching together can be mindblowingly tedious can’t it! I spent my life in textiles, stitching all the time but somehow couldn’t face stitching them together! I also love texture so evolved a quick crochet technique that joins quickly. Now I have a system that works for me. My current blankets are smaller but I still use the same system. Will you make another?

Thank you so much 😊 I agree! Making all the squares is great but then having to stitch them all together is just so much work haha! I need a system that is quick and easy, I think until then I won’t be making a granny square blanket for a while, at least not one with this many squares!
